Prof. Kioseoglou George

George Kioseoglou is a Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Technology of the University of Crete and an affiliated member of IESL/FORTH. He obtained his PhD in Physics from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1999 in the area of spectroscopic studies of electronic states in semiconductor heterostructures. After a postdoctoral position at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he joined the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington DC where he continued his work on efficient electrical spin injection and detection in semiconductors. From 2004 to 2007 he was a National Research Council (NRC) Fellow with the materials physics branch at NRL. In 2007 he joined the Department of Materials Science and served as its Director of Graduate Studies in the period of 2010-2015. His main research interests are in the physics and applications of semiconductor nanostructures, Spintronics and Valleytronics, and in the electronic and optical properties of 2D materials. Prof. Kioseoglou has shared 3 times the NRL Alan Berman research publication award for his work on spin injection in GaAs and Si spin-LEDs. He has co-authored over 90 scientific publications in refereed journals with 4 very-highly cited papers in Spintronics, more than 6500 total citations and an h-index of 37, and more than 270 contributed conference presentations. He gave more than 40 invited talks in international conferences and written one book chapter in Handbook of Spintronics.

Maria Kafesaki is Associate Professor in the Dept. of Materials Science and Technology of the University of Crete and Adjunct Researcher at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). She obtained her Ph.D. in 1997, at the Physics Department of the University of Crete, Greece. She has worked as post-doctoral researcher in the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas in Madrid, Spain, and in IESL of FORTH (1997-2001). Her current research is on the area of electromagnetic wave propagation in periodic and random media, with emphasis on photonic crystals and metamaterials. She has more than 100 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings (with more than 5000 citations), she has participated in various European projects as well as in the organization of many international conferences and schools. Also she is Fellow of the Optical Society of America.

Prof. Iliopoulos Eleftherios

Dr. Iliopoulos is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Physics, University of Crete and an Associated Researcher of IESL-FORTH. He holds a Ph.D. (2002) from Boston University, Center for Photonics Research, USA. He has collaborated with a number of international companies (Lokheed-Martin Inc., EADS N.V., Aixtron SE, III-V Lab, EG&G Inc., BAE Inc., Astex Inc., Epion Inc.) and organizations (ARPA, ESA) in epitaxial growth of III-Nitride semiconductor heterostructures and nanostructures, in development of (opto)electronic devices based on them and in novel, QDs based, device concepts. He was a national representative and workgroup vice-chair in the European program COST-MP0805 “Novel gain materials and devices based on III-V-N compounds” and an elected member of the board of directors of the Hellenic “Micro&Nano” organization. He is a permanent member of the biannual EXMATEC workshop international steering committee and a management committee member of the “Crete Center for Quantum Complexity and Nanotechnology (CCQCN)”. He has authored or co-authored more than 80 publications in recognized international peer-reviewed journals with more than 1800 citations and an h-index of 25. He has been awarded as principal investigator/coordinator two international and one national research projects and has participated as co-investigator in numerous European ones.

Prof. Fotakis Costas

Costas Fotakis is currently Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Crete and Distinguished Member of the Foundation Organization for Research and Technology (FORTH). He has served as Alternate Minister for Research and Innovation from January 2015 till July 2019. During this time, he designed and implemented Research and Innovation policies in Greece and participated in the EU Research Ministers Council.
